What is depression?
Depression is a serious mental health condition, and it can appear in different forms. Many people experience a temporary low phase where they feel sad, unmotivated, or stressed for a short period of time. This is not real clinical depression; it is simply a temporary emotional state that improves on its own. The second type is actual depression, where a person constantly feels empty, unmotivated, sad, and trapped in negative thoughts. Overthinking becomes common, and in severe cases, suicidal thoughts may appear. This type of depression does not go away by itself unless the person takes action or receives support.
A depressed person may choose to stay alone and can even feel lonely in a group of people. There are many reasons behind depression—worry about the future, exam pressure, fear of failure, relationship issues, or personal struggles. Depression can also be caused by bullying, torture, or blackmail. Sometimes, people with jealousy or bad intentions try to bring others down using manipulation or psychological pressure. These tactics can push even strong and intelligent individuals into depression.
That is why it is important to understand what manipulation is and protect yourself from such people, as discussed in my previous blog.
Why is it important to know about depression?Depression is a serious mental health condition in which a person feels constantly unmotivated, sad, empty, and loses interest in daily activities. In severe cases, thoughts of suicide can also appear. Because of this, depression is dangerous and should never be taken casually. Many people still do not have the right information about it. Sometimes temporary feelings of sadness, stress, or anxiety are misunderstood as depression, but these are not the same. Real depression does not go away easily, and that is why it is important to understand its signs.
Lack of knowledge, fear of opening up, and social stigma make people suffer even more. When depression is ignored, it can lead to deeper emotional pain, overthinking, negative thoughts, and in the worst situations, suicidal behaviour. This is why awareness is necessary.
There is also a lot of misinformation. Some people wrongly believe that alcohol, smoking, drugs, or other harmful habits can reduce depression. In reality, they only give temporary relief and later make a person more depressed and addicted.
Understanding depression and learning healthy ways to deal with it is essential. Proper knowledge can save lives and help people recover. So, let’s begin by learning about it clearly and honestly.
How can depression be reduced?Depression is a mental illness that cannot be cured simply by ignoring it or doing nothing about it. It often develops due to continuous stress, overthinking, negative thoughts, fear, and emotional pressure. When these problems are not managed properly, they slowly affect a person’s mental health. For example, students preparing for competitive or higher examinations often face intense stress. They overthink about exam results, their future, and fear of failure. When expectations are high and results do not match them, negative thoughts may begin to dominate the mind. If this continues for a long time, it can push some students toward extreme emotional distress. Therefore, learning how to deal with depression is very important to prevent such situations.
There are many effective ways to reduce depression. Practices like meditation, pranayama, yoga, and regular exercise help in managing stress and calming the mind. Along with this, our mindset plays a major role. Instead of viewing work and challenges as a burden, we should approach them with a learning attitude and a positive mindset. Loving what we do and enjoying the process reduces mental pressure. Fear of failure should be avoided, because failure is a natural part of success. Many successful people have failed multiple times and have openly accepted that they struggled with depression, yet they stood up again, did not give up, and achieved success.
How I stay away from depression? As I mentioned in my previous blogs, I practice meditation, pranayama, yoga, exercise, and reading books. All these habits help me stay away from depression. Whenever I feel stressed, I do breathing exercises, meditation, or any activity that helps reduce stress and calm my mind. I also show gratitude towards God and believe that there is a power greater than me. When I face problems in life, I look up to someone bigger than me—God—and pray. This gives me positive energy, hope, and mental strength.
I try to enjoy my work instead of constantly worrying about it. Yes, stress is a part of life, and everyone experiences it, including me. The real problem starts when we keep thinking about stress again and again, which only increases it. I try to stop overthinking and focus on action.
I also read books and watch YouTube videos related to depression. By increasing my knowledge, I can understand the signs of depression and learn how to manage it better. I don’t worry about things that are not in my control, which helps reduce my stress. I also don’t fear failure. I ask myself whether I have worked hard enough—if yes, failure is just bad luck; if no, I work harder. I focus on effort, not stress.
In conclusion, depression is a serious mental condition, but it can be reduced and managed if we take the right steps at the right time. Understanding depression, its causes, and its effects helps us handle it in a healthier way. If you are already facing depression, do not panic or ignore it—worrying only makes the situation worse. Instead, take positive actions such as managing stress, staying active, practicing mindfulness, and seeking professional help when needed. Through this blog, I shared what depression is, why awareness matters, and how I personally stay away from it. Keep learning, keep growing, and take care of your mental health.
